Tropical Pacific SST Drivers of Recent Antarctic Sea Ice Trends

چکیده
A strengthening of the Amundsen Sea low from 1979 to 2013 has been shown to largely explain the observed increase inAntarctic sea ice concentration in the eastern Ross Sea and decrease in the Bellingshausen Sea. Here it is shown that while these changes are not generally seen in freely running coupled climate model simulations, they are reproduced in simulations of two independent coupled climatemodels: one constrained by observed sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific and the other by observed surface wind stress in the tropics. This analysis confirms previous results and strengthens the conclusion that the phase change in the interdecadal Pacific oscillation from positive to negative over 1979–2013 contributed to the observed strengthening of the Amundsen Sea lowand the associated pattern ofAntarctic sea ice change during this period.New support for this conclusion is provided by simulated trends in spatial patterns of sea ice concentrations that are similar to those observed. These results highlight the importance of accounting for teleconnections from low to high latitudes in both model simulations and observations of Antarctic sea ice variability and change.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Variability and Its Global Connectivity
This study statistically evaluates the relationship between Antarctic Sea Ice extent and global climate variability. Temporal cross-correlations between detrended Antarctic sea ice edge (SIE) anomaly and various climate indices are calculated. For the sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean, as well as the tropical Pacific precipitation, a coher...
متن کامل1 2 3 Decadal - Interdecadal Climate Variability over Antarctica and 4 Linkages to the Tropics : Analysis of Ice Core , Instrumental , and 5 Tropical Proxy Data
23 The Antarctic continent contains the majority of the global ice volume and plays an important 24 role in a changing climate. The nature and causes of Antarctic climate variability are, however, 25 poorly understood beyond interannual time scales due to the paucity of long, reliable 26 meteorological observations. This study analyzes decadal-interdecadal climate variability over 27 Antarctica...
متن کاملTropical Pacific Influence on the Source and Transport of Marine Aerosols to West Antarctica
The climate of West Antarctica is strongly influenced by remote forcing from the tropical Pacific. For example, recent surface warming over West Antarctica reflects atmospheric circulation changes over the Amundsen Sea, driven by an atmospheric Rossby wave response to tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. Here, it is demonstrated that tropical Pacific SST anomalies also influence th...
متن کاملThe Antarctic Dipole and its Predictability
This study investigates the nature of interannual variability of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship with the tropical climate. We find that the dominant interannual variance structure in the sea ice edge and surface air temperature fields is organized as a quasistationary wave which we call the “Antarctic Dipole” (ADP). It is characterized by an out-of-phase relationship between the ice and...
متن کاملTropical forcing of Circumpolar Deep Water Inflow and outlet glacier thinning in the Amundsen Sea Embayment, West Antarctica
Outlet glaciers draining the Antarctic Ice Sheet into the Amundsen Sea 1 Embayment (ASE) have accelerated in recent decades, most likely as a result of increased 2 melting of their ice shelf termini by warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW). An ocean 3 model forced with climate reanalysis data shows that, beginning in the early 1990s, an 4 increase in westerly wind stress over the continental shelf ...
